At last, Dasavatharam is screened. A movie made for nearly 2.5 years and thats the first mistake that Kamal & K.S. Ravikumar made - I would say.The story is that christian fletcher (An american - one of Kamal's 10 avataram) chases to get a biological bomb from Govind(Another Avatar) for his personal monetary benefits. The biological bomb kept in a vial if decomposes will kill many million people. Finally fletcher breaks the vial containing the biological bomb, he dies and at the same time Tsunami comes - neutralises the biological bomb reducing the death count from millions to thousands. Asin - the heroine - A brahmin girl tells its the perumal who brought down this death count and Kamal - as usual speaks atheism.
The mistake number two is the story and screen play is extended to show kamal's 10 different characters and the story does not require 10 characters. The avatars will pop all of a sudden and at one point of time you ll become busy in sorting out who is Kamal and Who is not in the movie. Even i got an illusion and saw my neighbour in theatre if he is not one of the avatars in the film.
The chase between fletcher and govind gave a feel of watching Tom & Jerry. Honestly....!!The screen play was very poor. The movie started very seriously showing the famous war between saivas & vaishiyas. The dialogues of those scene carried Sujatha's signature. As it went - the dialogues smelled Crazy's comedy and finally Kamal's pen bored the show. No body knows whats the message of the movie finally. really.its true.
I dont know who gave the idea. Himesh or Devisri prasad should not have scored music for this sort of movies. I would say they should have chosen Vidhyasagar. He would have made it commercial and atleast people would have said "paatu nalla irukku pa" when they come out of the theatres.
Another thing that screwed up the flim was the very very poor graphics. Even "viral sapra paiyan" kooda will tell - this is graphics.
Finally Perumal silai(Idol) was played like IPL. Definetly VHP will file a case against Kamal and Supreme court will do the third umpiring.....
As far as i know the idol Asin carried with her to all places is called "urchavar". Actually the "urchavar" wont come out of the temple unless there is a festival. But Asin carried the "urchavar" to all the places along with her.First of all girls are not supposed to touch the idol. These are really hurting, insulting the myth of hindus.
Karunanidhi banned the screening of Dan Vinci Code in tamilnadu as he told its hurting the belief of christians. What about this?
For Kamal fans like me - or - those who watched the excellent works of Kamal like - Hey Ram - Anbe Sivam - MiMaKaRaj - Avvai Shanmughi - who went to the theatres with huge expectation could see one more avataram othan than the 10 avatarams - the messavataram (mess:confuse)
I suggest you read this article http://vasanthbrainwave.blogspot.com/2008/06/dasavatharam-and-moreeeee.html ... the 10 characters depict how different people are connected and affected in a chaotic fashion... there is more to the movie than what you see when you look externally.... even the character which many think has the worst make up and not required, actually has a purpose....
ReplyDeletei agree with you that the screenplay is loose ... but you would appreciate more if you do some research on the movie... the make up was bad in many places.. but the way you described is very hurting... unfortunately we dont have the budge of hollywood movies...kamal has made use of the budgett in an efficient way unlike many jackasses who spend the money only in songs ....
when you review something, try to maintain a balance touching up both the pros and cons... this is just my personal opinion...
finally just think how much efforts kamal has put in this movie... i dont have words t describe his commitment... there is so much in this movie which you might miss even if you paid attention...If cinema is religion, kamal is GOD !!!
good. i read thru that article today but unfortunately the correlation between the 10 avatars in the film and the original dasavatharam is not shown explicitly in the movie.Its really a hard exercise for the audience to keep reference articles - "just" - to understand the movie. [May be the konar people can put a notes for this film in future.]

After i posted the review i felt that i should have appreciated the excellent roles - balarama naidu & vincent poovaragan. its my mistake and i didnt. but my review doesnt point the finger on kamal's acting.the flaws i have voiced for are all the aspects where the direction had remained silent.
i will accept that my review didnt potray the efforts Kamal has undertaken. but does it not it go wordless that kamal always takes lot of effort and commitment in his movies??? is not his brand??

ReplyDeleteThere is lot more than the 10 vishnu avtars correlation... every character had a part to play in terms of chaos theory... as you can see this is a multi layered movie. if you wish you can just enjoy the entertainment as such... at the same time there is lots of implicit stuff left untold becoz box office results would have been screwed. ksr and kamal wo8ld have discussed on this a lot and decided to draw the line there keeping the producer in mind... this is the unfortunate state that we got to accept... hey ram madhiri oru padam idhu vara naan pathadhhilla...but it bombed in the box office....right?
i too agree that the plot is not gripping, things were predictable, asin was irritating... kamal has pennned an awesome script though screenplay could have been better ... the script is very new to indian cinema... it was done keeping 10 characters in mind and there is enough justification for all those 10 chars...
to be honest, after watching it first time i felt little disappointed...but after reading some of the articles posted in orkut kamal forum, i understood a lot and i want to watch the movie again.. vasanth's blog is a compilation of all those posts in orkut... i m sure if you care to think back now, you would appreciate a lot more...
